Renewable Energy as "the" Solution? Actually, it's Complicated.

During this campaign season, many candidates are touting renewable energy development as the answer to most every ill or challenge faced in our economy. Whether it's emancipation from the tyranny of foreign oil, or the solution to our environmental woes, renewables are the "in" thing.

The only problem is, depending upon where you live and what sources of energy drive industry or heat homes, it's not so simple. In fact, it's complicated.

Economic Development: The Time to Court Businesses is Before They Expand Elsewhere!

Sounds obvious, of course, but finger pointing and crafting after-the-fact packages seldom help to retain businesses.

In my monthly column at MaineAhead, I use the example of Jackson Laboratory, one of Maine's leading research institutions, to make this point. Not every state (or province or community) can or should compete on every offer. We have to be rational about it.
